Ethyl 4-octenoate - Introduction
Ethyl 4-octenoate, chemical formula C10H18O2, is a colorless liquid organic compound.
Nature:
4-octenoic acid ethyl ester has an octylbenzene odor and is miscible with many organic solvents. It has a boiling point of 185-186°C and a density of 0.878 g/mL. It is soluble in ethanol, ether and other solvents, insoluble in water.
Use:
Ethyl 4-octenoate is commonly used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. It can be used to synthesize various chemicals, such as rubber preservatives, pharmaceutical intermediates, epoxy resins, plastic additives, etc.
Preparation Method:
The preparation method of ethyl 4-octenoate is usually through an acid-catalyzed esterification reaction. First, 4-octenoic acid (C10H18O2) is reacted with ethanol (C2H5OH) under acidic conditions to produce 4-octenoic acid ethyl ester and water (H2O). The addition of a certain amount of acid catalyst, such as sulfuric acid, during the reaction can accelerate the reaction rate.
Safety Information:
Ethyl 4-octenoic acid has low toxicity at room temperature, but may be irritating when inhaled or exposed to skin in large quantities. Therefore, care should be taken to avoid direct contact with skin and eyes and maintain good ventilation conditions. In case of accidental contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water. At the same time, it should be stored in a sealed container, away from fire and oxidizing agents.
